Transcendentalism - a composite philosophy that grew partially out of
discontentment with New England Unitarianism that had been growing increasingly
conservative.
During the 1800s, a new rebellious idea of transcendentalism sprang up and gained many followers, who were outraged and disgusted with the ideas of industrialism. The two concepts were entirely different. While the transcendentalists encouraged individuality, spirituality, idealism, self-reliance, and anti-government, the industrialists focused more on the ideas of working in unity, instruction, regulations, and production. Industrialism turned out to be the fall of transcendentalism. It was too big of a difficult task for industrialism and transcendentalism to coincide in the same society together. Before transcendentalists removed themselves from society, they helped advance social reforms that included efforts to increase women's rights and remove the institution of slavery.
